Keith,

I have Curt Brown's nephew's stamp that I could donate. Dick Brown retired and moved out of town. If that is something you would be interested in displaying, I'll bring it in.

That would be very cool Steve, hmmm, another potential collection???
THe MDSHS does have a nice collection from Albert Given, CE #1, that includes his original license and stamp!!! (Wish I had a tag)

Received yet another 3/4" Brass Tag from Sean R., thank you!

For those not yet participating, please consider donating yours for a collection to be displayed years down the road.

If your a Chapter Representative, please come to the upcoming CLSA Board Meeting with your tag, and hand it to me on behalf of MDSHS, since I will be attended as one of my Chapter's Rep. Much appreciated!

I have found RE46 (Drury Butler) a number of times in Sacramento County but I've never seen a loose one. I found RE53 (Joseph W. Gross) down in Freeport.

RE32 E.L Freeland did quite a lot of surveying in the San Diego region.

I do not have one of his tags handy though.

I do have a triangular brass plate set by Czerny Anderson , LS 2129 in 1947 that I might donate for the right cause.

I received a nice package from Michael Pallamary with different tags and washers from him. He also included two wood artifacts that were given to him from Curtis Brown.

Now for others, have you sent me one of your 3/4" tags to put into our collection to remember you into the next century?

I haven't topped this off in a couple months, but I know there are a number of you that have procrastinated, lol.

We have collected a good number of tags, washers, and various ID's and always looking for others.

With conferences coming up in the near future, there may be a small display thus far.

that I got surveying after leaving my fathers employ (if you can call it that) was with Wesley Hylan and Associates in Palm Springs. This is August or September 1969. I worked in the office drawing lines and circles for about two months, then the bosses decided they needed a chainman in the office across the street that housed the field crews.

I was picked for that endevor and Pete Billington was my "first" chief of parties. Huge handle bar mustache this fella had. Always wore low heeled cowboy boots as i remember it. He wasn't impressed with me at first, and I don't blame him. Heck, there are folks who still aren't.

I worked there until July of 1970, I turned 21 in the Springs. Gosh that is a long time ago. My youth is gone. Oh well, I digress. I was laid off. The temperatue was 121 degrees that day.

Anyway, didn't do much for the summer, then answered an ad for a draftsman in Elsinore for Fred Crowe and Associates. Fred, LS 3698, and Alton Pace ran the place out in the middle of no where out of an old real estate office at Railroad Canyon Road and the main road from Corona to Temeclua (two lane blacktop back then) now known as Interstate 15. No finer men than Fred or Al anywhere in the world, maybe just as fine, but not finer.

Anyway, Alton called Pete to check up on me before we had an interview. Evidently Pete told him not to let my appearance fool him, that I was "okay". At the interview Alton told me that they didn't hire "hippies" and I told him that I didn't have a problem cutting my hair and sideburns.

Worked there until late June of 71, not because of lack of work but because I wanted to take a month or two off and cruise the nation in a '53 Chevy Sedan Delivery with Mr. Natural the Do-Da Man painted on the side(what a bust). Alton and Fred didn't want me to leave even though I hadn't had a hair cut in 9 months and let my sideburns grow out. Learned a lot a Fred's place and Pete Billington was part of that.

Don't know what this has to do with tags except that Billington's(RIP) name came up.

Haven't received as many tags as I had hoped, but I have received around 50, with public entities included.

The earliest RE is #862
The earliest LS is only . . . #2129

I would like to thank Tim Mack, from Bakersfield, who dropped off 14 old 3/4" brass tags from various surveyors and civil engineers that he has recovered through his surveying careers.

The tags are currently kept together in one container, so I haven't posted a picture, lol. We have displayed the tags in and around a display of plumb bobs thus far, kind of using them as a back drop. The collection is up around 65 tags from both public and private sectors.

If you haven't donated a tag thus far, please consider it. Saturday February 12, 2011 is the next Board Meeting in Oakland and I will be attending. There may even be a small display from the Mount Diablo Surveyors Historical Society, with the current collection of tags.

If your not a Board Member, but planning to attend the upcoming CLSA/NALS Conference in Las Vegas, please consider bringing a tag at that time.

P.S., it is still legal to carry a 3/4" brass tag on the airplane, so no excuses, lol.

It is that time of year again when conferences are right around the corner. A number of surveyors have responded to this post and I am still hopeful to see additional 3/4" brass tags donated to the Mount Diablo Surveryor's Historical at the upcoming CSU Fresno conference next week.

Please consider bringing a tag with you and drop it off to add to our collection. Some put one on their key chain so they can remember, great idea! If your not attending the Fresno Conference, I'll see you in Reno in a couple months if you don't mail one prior.

Thanks to Gary Dixon for sending one of his tags. Please consider donating to this worthy cause, as this could become a great artifact.

A southern CA surveyor mentioned while at the Fresno Conf., that a similar collection is atop the San Bernardino Initial Point for those that make the hike. The rule is for those who hike to the top can affix one of their tags to the collection on a post. He said there must be around 1,000 tags. I have not made the hide (yet) so I do not know additional info on this.

Please consider putting a 3/4" tag on your keychain and bring it to the 2012 Conference in Reno.

Don't let the San Bernardino County surveyor catch you doing that though!!! They should be due about 1000 RS's or so then, right? ...or CR's at least.

I know Evan Page recently took one of my business cards so he could remember to place a tag on his key chain.
