THE POSITION
Under direction, to perform complex technical drafting, office engineering or related functions involving supervisory, administrative or highly specialized responsibilities.

One Engineering Technician II vacancy is located in the Department of Planning and Development - County of Santa Clara’s Surveyor's Office. The position is in support of the Development Services Manager and County Surveyors. The position is responsible for maintaining the County Surveyor GIS, assisting the public, staff, and clients in obtaining needed information, reviewing corner records and records of surveys, dedications, and annexations, and field work, as needed. The ability to provide excellent customer service is a key part of this position.

TYPICAL TASKS
• Assists in the design and drafting of roadway or structural design detailing;
• Prepares contract specifications and drafts final plans;
• Revises lesser complex engineering designs within established limits;
• Plans and supervises the preparation of construction drawings and other engineering materials;
• Prepares draft design guidelines for the review of a Civil Engineer;
• Reviews plans, building sites, and permit applications to determine conformance to County Ordinances and County policies, standards and regulations and makes appropriate recommendations or decisions subject to administrative approval;
• May act as coordinator on engineering projects involving contracts and agreements with other agencies and contractors;
• Checks and re-checks computations, specifications or other documents for accuracy, legality, and conformity;
• Conducts field reviews and investigations and prepares findings for review;
• Researches information for complex engineering and/or survey projects;
• May perform any Engineering Technician I task;
• May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
• Performs related work as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent AND Five (5) years of progressively difficult technical engineering experience.

Knowledge of:
• The principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry;
• Engineering construction design both hand and computer-aided (CAD) and drafting;
• Engineering specifications preparation and interpretation;
• Principles of supervision and training
• Principles of topographic land surveying;
• Typical office computer programs, such as word processing, spreadsheets and email;
• Autocad and GIS computer programs.

Ability to:
• Prepare and interpret complex engineering plans, specifications, reports, and other data;
• Analyze situations and take effective courses of action;
• Coordinate reviews and submittals with other divisions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
