The Compton Eagle Tree -- POB of the Rancho San Pedro -- is looking pretty sickly these days.

Sounds like a Monument Preservation Fund project, Jim?

Or has this already been done? Thanks for sharing!

No clue -- I just grabbed a Google StreetView photo. Compton is a long way from my bailiwick!

A tree that 99%, maybe 100%, of the population there have no knowledge of it's historical value. Someone will see it and determine it's a hazard and cut it down.
I was up in Bodie some years ago and went to see the old trees. Seems in the 50s or 60s some college student doing his doctorate got permission to cut down the oldest one to count the rings.
There is one in the outskirts of Santa Maria that in the 80's was still used to determine a boundary line, there must be a hundred bearings to it from the same point 1/2 mile away.
At the 101 and Lindero cyn there are 2 oaks estimated at 500+ years old in a old stream bed.
