CAL Survey #75
Crissy emailed me Cal Surveyor #75 (CALSURV75.pdf)
There is no article by Jim Fields, but he is mentioned as being on the 1984 PLSO conference agenda with a talk about the Benson Syndicate.

A bit off topic, but the mention of Jim Fields reminded me of a USFS project I worked on in 1982. Jim was the COR, or maybe the inspector.
I recall having a few beers after work one day with Jim and Donna in a pizza place in Weaverville. He was a quiet guy, but very friendly and knowledgeable. I can't say I knew him well, but I remember that the news of his accident came as a shock.

I worked on some projects in Siskiyou and Shasta County back in the early '90's and I believe Donna was the COR. We subdivided a township just north of Yreka and did some other work in the Castle Crags and Dunsmuir area. I believe all of the projects were originally surveyed by Benson and Associates.
It can be very discouraging searching for original evidence when it's 110 out and you're on the side of a steep mountain and you don't know for sure if the surveyors were ever there.

After reading the condensed article by Jim Fields (from the link Jerry provided), I checked with ACSM for the complete writeup. They looked through all their tehcnical papers between 1980-1988 and could not find the article or any mention of an author by that name.
Thought I would check with PLSO (Oregon association?) and see what they have. It would be nice to read the complete article.

Attached is the page of CAl Surveyor #75 that indicates Jim Fields and Steve Johnson were to give a presentation called "The Benson Syndicate, Then and Now" at the 1984 Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon conference.
