Book/discussion club (informal)

I tend to participate in book clubs, which can be a good way to share insights and knowledge. This includes many topics which are specifically surveying related, and a number of other peripheral topics useful for business survival today.

Book club discussions are great even if you haven't read the book. Sometimes just participating and watching can motivate to read a book later, or discover a topic one may want to investigate later.

It doesnt have to be a book that takes a long time to read, it can be something as brief as a 15 minute podcast, or a TED talk, etc...

While I'm making a list of few topics that can get the ball rolling, I'd like to hear other peope's interests. This includes you too, who works and reads but never chimes in. I need you to pull up a chair and join in.

Expertise in a topic is not needed. Just mild interest.

I am well aware that this is most likely to get the messenger 'killed'. I'm sure this is because I need another review of this material as much as the CLSA leadership and membership does.

This is another emerging technology we are missing out on capitalizing on its discoveries.
(Ok, I know psychology is a social science, and not literally technology, it's a metaphor)

This book is currently being promoted in many large companies, because this concept has been shown to produce results. It is a part of a social shift that we need to be attentive to in order to attract and manage and mentor people.

I thought about tackling Ethics, which Mike Pallamary is championing, but after reviewing the material (yes that's what I entertained myself with for new years eve), I am noticing that much of the material as presented builds upon some of the more basic psychological and spiritual concepts (as it should). I think we would all benefit from reviewing the basics, and tie it into more modern social dynamic.

Book discussions will be taking place in few weeks, in conjunction with "Mentoring Mondays" and Life of A Surveyor Facebook group.

We have a group of 50 to 100 possible interested participants. So far, I quickly counted about two dozen surveyors from California. Other significant groups are Texas and Florida surveyors.

I will give you additional information as we set things up.

Well indeed! I am in the process of writing three books, some articles, and some white papers at this time. I will weigh in when I can. I am also reading three books at the moment. I don't watch television much.

I do support the book club idea. Here's a project I took on during COVID Round 1. It was an intense labor of love. It took me 40 hours to rebuild the cover as the best copy available was scotch taped and written on. I did it by editing pixels, one by one.

We have teamed up with Trent Keenan and will be doing book club round table during wisdom Wednesdays broadcasts.

At the Western Regional Conference, I found a few supporters, and Trent Williams from Utah (the other Trent) put a date in place to start this program. Soooooooooooo, here we go!!!!!

• We are starting with Evidence and Procedures for Boundary Location – 7th Edition (One of the newest books published)
• We will be meeting the 2nd Wednesday and 4th Wednesday of the month.
• The first book has 19 chapters, and it will probably take us 10 months to record the discussions on each chapter.

tentative schedule is:

Wednesday, May 11th – Introduction to the format and Round Table Discussion about Chapter 1
Wednesday, May 25th – Round Table Discussion about Chapter 2
Wednesday, June 8th - Round Table Discussion about Chapter 3

We had a fantastic first session! I didn't get to count them all, but ballparking there were at least 50 people on my zoom screen. I believe there were over 90 signups.

Dr. Nettleman, who is a co author of the newest edition was in the meeting presenting, along with several surveyors specializing in expert witnessing from across the country.

It looks like we will be having more notable speakers in the future. I believe Gary Kent will join in at some point.

It would have been nice to have a stronger showing from our own (California) expert witness surveyors as well.
Orange County surveyor's office had a strong showing, Thank You for being interested and supporting this.

For of the meetings is a round table discussion. There ae specific discussions relating to the chapters in the book (we are on chapter 1 right now) and it is open to discussions dovetailing into specific topics and issues.
We had a good discussion on Boundary vs. Title.
The function and variety of levels of detail one can find in a boundary establishment narrative (either internal or placed on a map, or needed for a court case).
Pincushion issues were mentioned peripherally, and ae likely to 'pop up' again as we get more in depth.
Professionalism and levels of care were brought up and will be discussed in the future.
Engineers wanting to get back into practicing land surveying were mentioned.
Attracting and engaging younger/newer generations into and with the profession is another topic that was touched upon.

I would highly recommend that employers and leaders to attend this AND EVEN MORE SO to encourage people they are in charge of to join in.

These sessions are FREE and will be ongoing every other Wednesday, indefinitely.

Since these are open to attendance across the country, they are happening at 4PM Pacific. They are set to run for 90 minutes, however, interest is fairly high, and Trent allows them to run long, as long as attendees are willing.

They are also all being recorded and can be viewed later. It usually takes about a week before recordings are available.
