I like learning about history. I particularly like survey history, which goes way back before the Romans. There are Egyptian pictographs from a couple thousand years prior to the rise of Rome depicting surveying of agricultural lands in the Nile Valley.

Around 240 BC, just prior to the decline of the Greek Empire and early in rise of Rome as a multi-continent empire, Eratosthenes, the chief librarian of the library of Alexandria (Egypt) developed one of the earliest, and most accurate until the mid-1800s, spheriod model of the Earth based on solar observations.
