Newman, CA Survey Records

Dear Central Valley Surveyors,

I am researching a new project in Newman, CA and was wondering if someone has any information on City Well Monuments. I found a few nearby maps referencing "City Well Monuments" with no reference to a monumentation map, tie card or other record map. I called the City, and they just passed me off to the contract surveyor. The contract surveyor informed me that they do not have City Records. Does anyone know if there are Newman records for said "City Monuments"?

Ok, the records are in a cardboard box in a basement in an unknown building owned by the City of Newman.
Before the turn of the century, I provoked Garcia and Henry Engineering to send the records they'd been keeping,
to the City. They did so, however, the contract City engineer (at the time) didn't want to sort and file them.
My guess is that they have been tossed. Monuments do show up on the old City maps. Keep in mind there is and amended City map

ALSO , when you are surveying, and find old swing ties to a monument, something like old nails, but NOT PK or Mag nails, its best to
dig up the monument. Its been known that these ties aren't always 2 feet.
Fortunately 42 years ago, I worked closely with the "then" City engineer. He spoke, I listened.

Every time I drive by the Newman exit on I-5 I think of Seinfeld.

Isn't it a State law to sort and file recorded maps? Or are these laws just for the non govt people?

Thank you for the reply. It always fun when the City says "we don't have any City Monuments" and the contract engineer doesn't know about them either. The cool thing is the lids say Newman City Engineer, so they sure are City monuments.

Anyhow, I found everything I needed, and they all fit pretty well. I dug up one about 12" down in asphalt that has never been referenced on a map, but it was there. It's too bad when these old records disappear.

Oh and a quick response to "Land Butcher" Most if not all of the records I am talking about, date way back.
PLUS !!!! on of the local (well loved) surveyors, always used stadia for his measurements. this caused his distances to be suspect.
For retracement, we'd hold line and search up and down the direction. often times find his pipes or redwoods within a couple of feet
Interesting place.
