I have been asked to use my 5603 for measurement on a testing project. The goal is to mount the reflector on top of a moving vehicle and start shooting and saving point from my gun.
My question is if the stored coordinates are good (accurate), since I never taken shots while moving.
My other question is if it's possible to have time stamp on every shot stored.
Do you think of any other survey instrument that can do it?

I've done it many times with a a GPS rover but never with a total station... It might work but I believe they usually shoot 2 or 3 distances for redundancy so you may want to try dialing the settings first

Sako: I see no reason why it would not work... that is if the 5603 can quickly respond. Recording actual measurements would be preferred, and could reduce the response time of your data logger.
I have used an EDM to take positions of a moving boat for hydrographic cross sections... recorded in a field book and using a recording fathometer in the boat. It worked fine but only one EDM we had was capable of making quick measurements on the moving target.
Try it, report back.

When I use my 5603 with TDS data collection software, the software tells me to stand still while taking the measurement. Beyond that, one ought to consideration of the capacities of the equipment. For example , the zero offset prisms must be perpendicular to the line of measurement , otherwise error is introduced into the measurement. If you are using a 360. prism, then how far away one can be and still get a signal from the diode is a consideration. Some other technology might be better suited , such as continuous GPS or laser scanning.

Trimble makes some machine control instruments that are designed specifically for moving target measurement. If your instrument doesn't cut it then you might consider talking to a dealer about renting a Trimble SPS 930 or some other equivalent instrument

What would it prove if we had multiple instruments shooting the same moving target and did a comparison?
Endpoints in standard mode and stationary and well defined course in tracking mode.
