Passing of Edgar C. Hanlin LS 3341

Post by Roger5912 »

My Father, Edgar C. Hanlin, LS 3341 passed away Thursday December 17, 2015 from congestive heart failure at 86 years old, peacefully and surrounded by family.

Dad worked at the same company for 60 years except for his military service in Korea , from 1950-1952 and eventually became one of the corporate partners in MHM, Inc. He learned surveying at the Army Engineer School in Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 1950 and was licensed in California in 1966. He was a great boundary surveyor taking courses through the University of California Extension and many workshops from Roy Minnick. He was well respected in the northern California region and was a member of the Northern Counties Chapter serving as Vice President in 2004. He will be missed by his family, friends and professional colleagues but his fine surveying work will live on through the numerous maps and documents in the public records.

I am proud to follow in his footsteps.

You can count me among those in northern California who respected Edgar. I have worked in the same area since 1976 and I am proud to say that he was an unofficial mentor of mine. I recognized early on that he was an accomplished and dedicated surveyor and every time I ran across his work I learned it could be counted on to be thorough and accurate. Many times he would welcome me into his office and he freely shared copies of maps from his old files. We got along very well together and I always enjoyed his company. I am saddened to learn of his passing and wish all of his family the best.

Hello Roger, we don't really know each other but we met at Pomona (rockin' to the band in the quad during lunch) & up at the CLSA ExCom meeting last month. I want to extend my sympathy to your family and say a prayer for them. Your dad sounds like he was a very special person.

Just about 20 years ago, I visited MHM (different location than now) to see if I could get copies of some old records. A guy in his mid-60s or so and a full head shorter than you Roger, showed me to the back room which was wall to wall flat files and file cabinets, brought me to a particular cabinet and invited me to look through 2 or 3 drawers that might have what I needed. Afterward, he made copies and didn't charge me anything for the records or his time. Took the time to give me a little background on the area around the site we were working on as well. Really nice man. I bet that was probably your dad.

My condolences to you and your family. You're fortunate to have been able to mentor into this profession under a man like Edgar. I'd bet he was a great dad as well.
