Contract City Surveyor asking for expiration date on my stamp
I thought since 2012 we are not required to add the annoying expiration date when we sign and stamp. has anybody else asked to add the date?

just tell him
that it's not required. If he says it is, ask him for the law that says so.

I agree with Bruce.
Just doing it does not educate the uninformed.

To fully fund govt first the national debt would have to be paid. The US Govt is $18 TRILLION in debt, using 350 million people in the USA it would require $51,000 from every man, woman and child to pay it off. And that's just the Federal debt. Did you write your check yet?

As a County Surveyor, I still see plenty of private surveyors who put their expiration (and mine), either because they like to, or more than likely because they aren't aware that requirement no longer exists. I just inform them it's optional to include, but to remove mine.
It might be more helpful if you point out that 8761 used to include that requirement, then they can satisfy themselves by looking at an older version (pre 2010 or 2011- can't remember exactly when the changed occurred?) and the current version without it.

I personally was against removing that requirement, because now isn't it the map reviewers responsibility to go to the State License Lookup to see if that individual is still active , or is the surveyor submitting maps with an expired license?
I was told the expiration date on the stamp was simply placed there for a reminder to the licensee that their fees are due. I say hogwash, because if you can't remember when your fees are due, how did you get a license, lol.
For those reviewing maps, are you confirming the submitted map has been signed by a valid license, or are you assuming that license has not expired. Hmmm, just a caution for those signing maps that a map is technically correct, but you may not have confirmed the surveyor has a non-expired license.
I will continue to place my "Expiration Date" with my stamp to show my dues are paid in good standing.

CE's still have to note their expiration date and I think we should too. CE's also sign over their stamp, another good idea as it reduces the ease for copy and paste.

The only thing it proves is that you're capable of writing in a future date. If a guy's license has expired and he's still submitting maps, he's already committing fraud, so why not dress it up a little and fake the expiration date?I will continue to place my "Expiration Date" with my stamp to show my dues are paid in good standing.
I never did like having to fill in the expiration date, and am glad I no longer have to.

It might be just the date that they sign the plans, not the expiration. My error.

Education goes a long way!
In a last minute effort to get some legal descriptions done, a City Engineer informed us, "we need to get the expiration dates on the stamps"! My email response was, "although, I can do that, and overnight the package again, for your information, it is not required by law, and is optional". I attached the portion of the law relative to this item, and received an email back which said,
"I did not know of the change in the law, and thank you for that information. your legals are good to record"! Just like with some architects and engineers, education, goes a long way!
Today, a small battle was won for the survey community!
