Drones and Right of Entry

So, aside from the FAA stuff, the application of drones for topographic surveying and mapping, to name just a single use, is here.

How are we going to address the right of entry issues in relation to the public's right to privacy?

What is CLSA doing?

Of course the FAA stuff is interesting too.

Anybody care to comment?

Aerial mapping is done all the time over and above a large unsuspecting population. Now it can be done much closer to the ground and more obviously within eyesight.

Is privacy a legal guarantee?

Good points.
These things can buzz your ear and video tape you while picking your nose, a pervert's dream come true.

Some can provide sub-ALTA Standard accuracy point cloud data. The commercial application potential is staggering.

Satellite cameras can see a baseball, and that's what the govt admits to. I'm betting more like dimples on golf balls.
Other free world countries have ok'd this type of aerial photography, so that would be somewhere to start legal issue resolutions.

I seem to remember Barbara Streisand suing Google over this issue and losing, and that had nothing to do with producing a product for any engineering purpose.

Most times when google earth gets a pic of a person or address or license plate they blur it out. My son's GF was pictured once.
They have been chased out of areas.

Ok, that went nowhere.

Mr. Versteeg, true about the aerial mapping.

What I am talking about is what these drones are capable of doing. They can hover, they can fly at 10,000 feet, or at 10 feet, or at 2 feet. They can look into your bedroom window.

The right to privacy people should be going nuts about this, including us.

But, land surveyors have right of entry onto private property to conduct their business. Should the commercial application of this technology fall under the domain of the professional land surveyor?

NO, NO, NO. Let's wait until non-surveyors do (think GIS, machine guidance, GPS, etc.) , and then we can all sit around and ***** about how it SHOULD be ours! BOO HOO!

I know what would happen in my community. It would be a new bird season, due to the rural nature, most everyone owns/uses shotguns for either, quail, duck, wild turkeys, rattlesnakes, etc., It would be another trophy on the wall at the local Fish & Game Hall. "Yup took that thing out with one shot at 40 yards."

During one of the local wildland fires, it was an issue for the fire aircraft, a hazard that was taken very seriously.

I think it could be a very good tool if not abused. The question is how to control without encumbering business with needless regulations yet protecting the public?

We do aerial photography now, and you are not going to do any survey grade aerials lower then 50ft and I would think 100ft to clear trees, wires etc.
What are the rules for aircraft aerial photo? Other than altitude what else would have to be looked at for adjustment.

Since I know what town he lives in I was able to find his locations on google earth and send him his lat longs. LOL
