September 2013 Footsteps Boundary Surveying Newsletter Available

Post by Sunburned_Surveyor »

Today I'm pleased to announce the publication of the first issue of the Footsteps Boundary Surveying Newsletter.

This newsletter expands on boundary surveying and real property law topics covered in my Footsteps Column in the American Surveyor Magazine. You'll always be able to download the current issue and the archives from this web page:
http://www.redefinedhorizons.com/footst ... ewsletter/

The September 2013 Issue is available from that web page now. It is also available in the Google Currents application for tablets and smart phones. There is no charge to download and read the newsletter. It is made available freely under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States License.

For those that commute to and from work I hope to have an audio version of the newsletter completed before the end of next week. It will also be available at no charge.

Please let me know if there is a specific topic related to boundary surveying that you would like to see discussed in the newsletter.

Thanks.

Wow Landon. Nice work. Color me impressed.

How is it you have the 500 hours per week it obviously must take to juggle your job, your writing, your webinars/seminars, your Central Valley Control network and your unfiled maps archive?

Thank you,

I guess the obvious question is "Why?" There are lots of other websites, newsletters, forums and other manner of Land Surveying related platforms available, why do you feel it necessary to add yet another one?

(This question is by no means a reflection of my own feelings about your endeavor, good luck.)
I call them like I see them.

I hope my publication will be adding a unique voice. I hope the articles are longer and more in-depth than those found in the traditional surveying magazines. They will also focus their content exclusively on the boundary surveyor. (There won't be any laser scanning articles in my newsletter. :] )

If you are happy with the existing platforms that distribute information about land surveying...there is no reason to read my newsletter. However, I think there will be a few people that find enough value in the new publication to add it to their reading list. Time may prove me wrong.

If you are a member of CLSA, why not just contribute your articles to the existing Surveyor magazine? That would resolve the need to ask for donations and to request topic ideas – just use the existing platform. Why run something parallel when there is already something there to get your unique voice heard?

Contribute an article to state CLSA mag ??

Post by desert turtoise »

I can only speak for myself. I have been told by a national surveyor magazine which published an article of mine that I have good writing skills and a comfortable kind of style that contributes to readability.

I have attempted to contribute a few articles to the state magazine over the years; the last one about 4 years ago. This is just not as easy as it sounds;
particularly if you have anything to say that touches on political matters, such as comments on how the board or association handles their business.

Just my two cents worth.

The Cal Surveyor Is A Great Publication

Post by Sunburned_Surveyor »

The Cal Surveyor is a great publication. It is one of the best state land surveying association magazines in my view. (I just got done reading the issue that came in the mail.)

However, as Dave mentioned...there are some limitations to the magazine. I submitted an article to Cal Surveyor a couple of years ago but it wasn't published because the content was too controversial. I respect this decision of the editorial team. Cal Surveyor is the magazine of an organization that represents many views...it has to be careful about what it publishes.

I still think controversial topics need to be discussed. It keeps our profession healthy...and prevents the stagnation of ideas.

I also don't want to make a secret of my intention to run a small publishing business. I think there is a need for quality information on boundary surveying and land planning, and I hope to meet that need. I think there are peers of mine that will see and appreciate the value in my content. I don't have ambitions to build a media empire...I'm trying to help support my niece...who is a young mother of two that would like to work from home. If I can leverage my knowledge of land surveying and publishing to stimulate the thinking of my peers and help out my family...I would like to do that.

I may fail in my modest effort...but I think we need to fail more our culture...not fail less. From many failures comes a few great successes. :]
