City of LA Tie Sheet Source
I haven't had any luck finding a source for City of LA Tie Sheets.
Does anyone have any idea of where I might find the tie sheets for West Pico & Tremaine and West Pico & Longwood? I found lead & tacks at each of these intersections but can't find any data leading me to the Centrline/Centerline points from these marks.

Searching in LA is a little more involved than just clicking that link. It's not really that easy, even if you get to that page. This is what I do...maybe there's an easier way, but this works for me.
http://navigatela.lacity.org
1. Accept to enter the system.
2. In the pull down menu at the top left choose “Vault†at the bottom of the list and a pop-up window will open with the Engineering Vault search page.
3. In the GIS page (Navigate LA) zoom in the area you are interested in and hover your cursor to find out the Survey Field Book Index No. which is 129B181 for the area you are requesting.
4. On the Engineering Vault search window (pop-up window) click “Index Searchâ€
5. On the next page, in the pull down choose “FB†for field book
6. In the blank box enter the Survey Field Book Index No. in this format “129%181†and click search.
7. When the list comes up, sort by page number so that 99A is on the top. 99A for every field book in LA is the index sheet. Click the green paper symbol at the right side to get a tiff file of the page you need.
8. To read the index – any number that is in a circle is a page of FB 129-181, so if you see 150 inside a circle that means you need FB 129-181, Page 150. You can find the page numbers in the list. If there is a letter and a number (like D56) at the intersection, use the legend at the bottom of the index sheet to get the field book number you need to search for and the number refers to the page number. D56, in this case, is FB 18601, Page 56.
9. You can enter the old field book numbers in the search field. If the pages you need aren’t there you can click “Scan On Demand†and request the pages be uploaded into the online vault. It takes them a day or two to complete the request, but in most cases they do get it up there. You will have to go back each day and check if they did it, as they will not notify you. (In your case you need to request a scan on demand for FB 16707, Pg 8 & 9 and FB 18601, Pg 47 & 56 if you want the old FB’s).
This engineering vault also includes all of their utility plans and street improvement plans. City benchmarks are here.
Another helpful map is the Cadastral map. If you go to this link (http://eng.lacity.org/index.cfm) and click Map Gallery, you will see a huge list of different mapping products you can download. Click Cadastral Maps and then find “129b181†to get a PDF. They usually have references for street widenings that happened and they show street address numbers, underlying map info, some other easements as well. There are also cadastral maps with ortho and/or contours shown as well.
Good luck and have fun in LA.

Thanks, gentlemen! You're both Aces!
I managed to find the website, but I sure didn't have luck navigating it the way Ryan did.
The LA site is awesome. Do they run classes in how to navigate it, though?
Every other city and county in the state, take note of what Los Angeles has done. This is the way it should be. Hats off to LA!

Ian has a point there - "The LA site is awesome. Do they run classes in how to navigate it, though?" That class could be a great benefit (and fundraiser?) for the LA Chapter. Maybe it could be done as a CLSA Webinar?
Maybe each Chapter could prepare a class of this type for their local jusrisdictions, and we could compile them into a downloadable CLSA member resource.

You will find mostly that CR's have not been set for these. Many of these points were originally set early in the 1900's and perpetuated by city tie books for years and that's the way it is. The City workers did city field notes and that's it. If a private surveyor did any they do file city notes in PE (for Private Engineer) books, but IMO that does not relieve them of the CR requirement. I don't know if the city itself is exempt from the CR requirement.
LA County keeps the CR's and RS's at this location for free download...

Plus you can also obtain RS's and other recorded maps from the Engineering Vault that fall within city limits.

Darth, are you asking if the City has filed CR's and/or RS's for these monuments per 8771?Darth Vader wrote:Thanks for the link to http://navigatela.lacity.org it is a great website and your directions sure made navigating easy.
Do you know if there is a cross reference to the Corner Record or Record of Survey which completes the state requirment for these points being set?
That is a very good question!

No sir, I know of not such a thing; but as much as an unrecorded map available for review, I appreciate this resource.Darth Vader wrote:Thanks for the link to http://navigatela.lacity.org it is a great website and your directions sure made navigating easy.

As food for thought; you can call Thousand Oaks and ask for the ties for Tract XXXXX; and if you get the right tech on the phone they will fax you a tract map with hand written ties to the lead and tacks you found, I'm pretty sure setting those ties was a "requirement" at some point. Don't get me wrong; the surveyor blew it, should have tagged the points and filed a corner record; but as a municipality; where is the City's responsibilitry? That is an excellent question that I cannot answer.
