That was my favorite part of surveying, Got all over Irvine ranch and other neat areas before the sticks went up.

BTW is that target biodegradable LOL

Given:
Photo One:
1) snow fence (left edge of picture)
2) snow on north aspect
3) long shadow (early morning)
4) deep canyon (gorge)
Photo Two:
1) snow on north aspect
2) medium shadow (mid morning)
3) radio tower on horizon
4) chair lift (below and right of tower)

I am guessing somewhere near Squaw Valley Ski Resort; maybe even in the vicinity of Siberia Bowl or KT22.

Squaw Valley sounds about right; maybe on the Granite Chief Trail? If I ever was at the pictured junction it would have been nearly 40 years ago. I backpacked in the Granite Chief Wilderness Area that one time, but don't remember much about it.

Fun spot to work, in any case.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
Granite Chief Wilderness, the trail marker was on the PCT south of the Wilderness area. We couldn't take the quads in that area of course.

I recognize Point Sur. I drove up there for a Pre-bid conference on some of the buildings about 10 years ago before I got out of the insanity that is working in Construction for the State.

The proposed project involved replacing the double-hung windows in one of the buildings plus repairing unknown dry rot. One of the contractors said his cabinet shop could make new windows just like the ones up there but the Department wanted to restore the old windows.

We got zero bids on that (too many unknowns).

Like shown in the photo I got to go up there on a clear day too. Point Sur is often shrouded in fog.

Why bother scanning it? Why not just put a small charge under it and get on with the bridge rebuild?

I recommended they use the boulder to help save some of the demo costs, you could scale off the boulder and take out the bridge in one blast.

The real reason is that the USFS was concerned that the boulders would dam the creek below. We were working along with the geologists to try and develop velocities and magnitudes of the rockfall for the scaling efforts. Pretty interesting project but would have been more visually appealing to go with my first recommendation.

That is one solid setup. A 2' diameter concrete pillar 10' above ground.

We have sheds built around these now and the instruments turn themselves on and do the survey 4 times a day.

Nice shots guys, its one of the things I love about surveying. would take summers surveying off the each in Malibu any day. Would do it for free if the need to eat wasn't so great. =]
