Recorder does not want to let me inspect the original map.

Post by Lee Hixson »

I can't find the CA Code Section that makes it mandatory that County Recorders allow one to inspect the original maps that have been filed in their counties.

Am I mis-remembering? I thought it was in the law somewhere.

Also, if there is such a code, does it only cover inspection, or does it also allow one to have a copy made from the original?

It would seem to me

that recording something in the public records would mean that the public could see it. Good Luck.

(e) The original map shall be stored for safekeeping in a
reproducible condition. The county recorder may maintain for public
reference a set of counter maps that are prints of the original maps
and produce the original maps for comparison upon demand.
