Auctions at the CLSA/NALS Conference

The annual CLSA conference is scheduled for March 5-9 in Las Vegas, jointly with the Nevada Association of Land Surveyors.

The annual conference is the venue for the major fundraising activities of the CLSA Education Foundation, which this year will be awarding $45,975 in scholarships (out of a possible $48,225).

We have a Bowling Tournament "Funraiser" scheduled for Saturday evening (March 5th). It is called a "Funraiser" because we hope to raise a little bit of money for scholarships there, but we really have a lot of fun doing it.

There will be silent auction tables set up in the exhibit area and the highlight of the conference is the live auction scheduled for Monday evening.

I ask for your help to make these fundraisers successful. Please search out items for donation that can be auctioned off to benefit the scholarship fund. We have had a few donations of old survey equipment already, however much more is needed to make the auctions successful.

Attached is a photo of an antique photo similar to the one I will be donating to the auction (same setup- different poses). Items of interest to other Surveyors such as this, new or old survey equipment, books, gift baskets, wine or really anything of value are requested.

Many CLSA Chapters not only raise funds for sponsored or memorial scholarship funds, they also donate items of interest from the Chapter area (wine, delicacies, buck knives, gift certificates, etc.).

Please discuss donations at your Chapter meetings and think about what unique item you can contribute to make it a fun and successful auction.

If you know of someone with items that they are willing to donate and they are not planning on attending the conference, please contact me, any one of the Foundation Directors, or the CLSA Central Office and we will work out a way to pick up the items and get them to the conference.

We raised a respectable $10,600 at last year's auction despite the economic downturn. With a good turnout of donations and lots of participation in the events, we can potentially double that number this year, and have a lot of fun doing it.

I picked up a copy of Boundary Control and Legal Principles, 3rd edition, in new condition at the CSUF conference and I am thinking about donating that to the auction at the CLSA/NALS conference. How much do you think something like that will sell for at auction?

I am working on getting a couple of donations for the auction; however more are needed to make the auction a success. Please consider a donation, talk to your friends about it and bring it up at you CLSA Chapter meeting.

The East Bay Chapter will be donating local wine to the auction, has your Chapter made a commitment yet?

I have that defective Evidence and Procedures book (or was it Boundary Control and legal Principles?) that had the blank pages. Wiley gave me permission to photocopy the missing pages to include and then donate it to the Scholarship Auction.

Some may see it as a defective book. I prefer to think of it as a collector's item. After all, there can't be many like that around. ;-)

I have a feeling that Manual will be one of those items at the live auction that I really want, will get in one bid, and then the two or three surveyors who actually have real money to bring to the auction will very quickly raise the stakes well out of my reach.

But I'll still get a bid in, just in case.

A couple of years ago in San Diego, this exact thing happened with a shrink wrapped copy of Albert White's 'History of the Rectangular Survey System'. I remember having some money to spend (and I really wanted the book), but the live auction quickly went ever upwards with the book selling for over $500 if I remember correctly.
