49th CSUF Geomatics Conference Recommendation

I wanted to take a couple of minutes to strongly recommend the surveying conference put on my the CSUF Geomatics Program in Fresno every year. This is my second year at the conference, and I find it to be a great value. I think I may learn more there than I do at the CLSA conference.

This year I enjoyed learning about double monumentation from Steve Parrish, about pricing professionial services from Larry Phipps, about heights, elevations, and the geoid model from Thomas Meyer, and disucssed some interesting road right-of-way cases with Wendy Lathrop.

My only dissappointment was not being able to attend multiple sessions at once. I know I missed great material on datums from Marti Ikehara. My buddy from work also attended two (2) great presentations on advances in machine control technology and on construction staking of bridges that I missed.

I can honestly say what I learned at the conference this past weekend could help me avoid potentially career ending mistakes. I know money is tight for many of us. If you are looking for great education value, please consider the Fresno conference.

I'm not a graduate from the Fresno program, so I hope my opinion isn't too biased.

I agree, great value for the buck. Great speakers, wide range of topic's.

I listened to Wendy, who even tho from the east coast, does a great job of presenting valid issues that we should all be considering.

I will agree I missed some good sessions due to overlap but well worth the $$.

Yes I am a grad, but due to expense and distance the state conference is out of reach, so this a viable alternative.

PS Got to see a few folks I have not seen in awhile.

Due to distance? Reno isn't all that far from where you are. Tell ya what RAM, you thumb it up to sonora and I'll drive down that far to get you before heading over the mountain. Pack light, I may be on the motorcycle.

One of the greatest rewards in speaking at Fresno is the opportunity to assist some of the upcoming surveyors so that they can learn about the rewards and challenges out there. Fresno has a great program. Many of us who regularly attend and speak always participate in the dinner auction. This year I paid an enormous amount of money for an old beat up brass cap (read paper weight). I bought a pad of outdated graph paper for $20. My grandchildren will make good use of it as crayon paper. I have bought so many thing at the auction including broken rods, used and outdated equipment and other obsolete things, all for ridiculous prices. Needless to say, all of the money goes to the school and the students.

For those of you who do not contribute to the scholarship program or donate in other ways, please consider the auction. It is a great way to raise money for the students. After all, these are the fine young men and women who we will be working with one day. Their future and interest in the profession is dependant upon our support of their efforts.

Thank for the offer, but I didn't know that they made snow chains for motorcycles.

In the winter it is 5 hours to Reno on a good day but can be 10-12 in the fog and snow.

But Frankly due to the ecomony, I will have to pass.

I have been attending the CSU Fresno conference off and on for 20 years and always enjoy the program. It is an intimate setting really. The format is Thursday afternoon thru Saturday noon so you do not get tired of staying in a hotel or miss a lot of work. The program usually has some top notch presentations. Some of the presenters this year are scheduled to give the same talks at the ACSM conference in March.

The students put on the conference with guidance from the faculty of course and it is refreshing to see their commitment to making the program successful.

I think everyone who attends has fun and learns something one way or another.

Well worth the drive and the low ticket price

Hey Pallamary,
I hope it was me that got that graph paper up to $20-, hehehee.
But then I ended up with one standard grey, book end for $5- (stipulation was it had to stay in the auction) till someone else paid $5- for me to take it. Later that night a pair of book ends went for $5-.

It was a fun night as always!
