We've all seen double monuments (or areas where it's a pin cushion), but this took some work! I realize there are people out there who can out measure anyone, but the Art of Surveying eludes this person.

Out doing some preliminary recon, this is a 16th corner perpetuated by a brass cap in the well when the road was redone a while back. Wasn't expecting to find a pipe there, also. This took some work and effort!!

On the plus side, they’re not 50 foot pincushions with varying levels of reliance on both.

Not knowing what the notes and maps say, but I honestly may think the IP was there first, and the County came in and set a disk???

On a side note, I have a County Surveyor not accepting my RS map because there are various maps with mon-mon distances of up to 0.15', so he is concerned with Junior-Senior Rights. Yes, he is trying to put his boundary resolution on my map, simply RIDICULOUS! My 0.15' would fit nicely within some of these Pin Cushion scenarios!!!

Mike, you are a much more refined person than I, dealing with that situation with class. My inner sailor would jump out from time to time with those colorful metaphors!!

PLS7393, it is possible, I didn't do a lot of research, just pulled what I had at my fingertips, just doing a bit preliminary recon.

What happened to the fine art of surveying?

When the BLM accepts a monument of local control and want to make it clear in the field that they are accepting the position, they replace the monument at the location as found with their own pipe & cap, and bury the found monument upside down alongside their pipe.

To be clear, the old monument should be completely subsurface to avoid confusing those subsequently visiting the corner. Perhaps in the case of the BC with the iron pipe alongside, that's what the county crew setting the BC was trying to accomplish. Just a guess trying to give benefit of the doubt in the situation.

In the 2nd picture with the 4 open iron pipes, I don't see a way to afford the benefit of a doubt. That appears to be a clear case of at least 3 surveyors not knowing what their job was with regard to previously established boundaries.

I've had to intercept several cases like this during my map reviews before any damage was done in the field. Luckily, I've never had any of the surveyors argue with me, but I sure wish more would read this forum so it wouldn't even dawn on them to call a monument off by 0.03'.
