Why is it scary? Is it because those surveyors that have been around since before GPS would have to actually teach their staff how to use different tools and methodology to get the job done?

Who do you think it should be scarier for...surveyors? Or those contractors and other unlicensed people that currently use GPS tools?

Scary that constellations controlled by "others" could spoof their positions giving you false data.

Scary spending $20k to $30k and not be able to use it.

Ha! Good call about the teaching, Ric! I sometimes wonder about the staff not being properly trained on GPS!

Bam! There's your position - one 20 minute sitting. Come back tomorrow and do again to determine your RMS values? Oh what do you think you're doing - geodetic surveying? Many don't employ GPS with the care and redundancy that it deserves. Precise ephemeris considerations? Mission planning? Space weather considerations? Naw, the box tells me everything!

And you're right about the "others" using GPS. I just got off a grading project where the grader, on past projects, used GPS controlled grading equipment. They buried a pipe without chase-wire 'cause they wanted to save $s . . . He came back a few days later and "drove" to where the pipe was "suppose" to be and missed the pipe-trench by six feet!
