I just heard that Marc lost his battle with cancer yesterday.
Former CLSA Corporate President and multi-decade veteran of public and private practice, he graduated from Fresno State, I think in 1979.

OMFG! More sad news. I had no idea.
He reminded me of a TALL Yosemite Sam. They broke the mold when they made ol' Marc.
Rest in peace, Marc.
Our deepest sympathies to Marc's family, friends and his CLSA cousins.
Most sincerely,
Phil - Sonoma

Sad news.
Thanks for sharing Dave.
Marc was a big part of the team at CLSA when I became involved at the State level.
He will be missed.

I liked and certainly, respected Marc Van Zuuk.
I am saddened to hear of his passing. I enjoyed many conversations with Marc over the years, many of which centered around horses. I especially respected the fact he was his own man. There was a recent period in CLSA time when we had a handful of ne'er-do-well past presidents, approximately 12 of the living 40, running around flapping their gums and making false or misleading statements about a particular CLSA member and the OC practice based chapter. Not past president Marc Van Zuuk, he would have no part of it without definitive proof - which never came. He was one of the first to stand up and hard question this handful of shadowy past presidents. He didn't do it on my behalf, he was a man of character.
Thank you, President Marc Van Zuuk, a man of character, for your contributions to the profession, may you rest in peace.

I’m so sorry to hear about Marc, like some of you have said I did not know he was struggling with cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was truly a professional and I believe he cared deeply about the profession and I will miss seeing him.
I was on the Executive Committee when Marc was President, no one ran a more efficient board meeting than Marc.

Although I never got to know Marc well, I greatly respected him as a surveyor and person. He just had a presence about him, which was fortified by his physical being. He was a professional peer who I was proud to have known. Life is short and takes unexpected turns, good and bad. Hug your loved ones, my friends.
RIP Marc. I am priviledged to have known you.

My condolences to his family and friends. Our paths crossed many times over the years and I always walked away thinking he was an excellent surveyor and a throw back to a time where your word was as a good as gold and a straight shooter. A kinder man you will never meet.
RIP, Marc

WOW, I am numb, Marc was old school in many ways, a man's man, yet embraced tech.if it made sense. I met Marc in 1993 working on the exam, where over the next 20+ years we would spent a lot of time, exchanging ideas, debating principles, looking each other in the eye, listening to the what the other had to say and then he would explain why he thought you were wrong, or when the light went on and he understood your view, he had a look, raise an eyebrow and say Hmmmm. Being a fellow FSU grad we would join forces to debate the OIT folks in good fun. We discovered we thought alike o many subjects but would debate just for the sake of hearing another view. I was not aware of his fight, but that was Marc, explains why last month I didn't get a call from him, as over the several years every time there was a big fire in my area, he was one of the first to reach out, either by email, call, did he need to come help me evacuate, he always said, " I'll hook up the trailer and be on the road in 30 min, just let me know", no thought to the fact that we were 150 miles apart, that was who Marc was. I am so lucky to have had Marc as a mentor, colleague, good friend.

I am saddened to hear of Marc's passing. I had the opportunity to work many years with Marc on the development and grading of the Professional Land Surveyor’s exam where we debated many questions /answers from many perspectives. Often times to the point where Marc would say something like, “I think we are to the point where we are picking the fly sh!t from the pepper!” – just a couple of the sayings he liked to pull out if the occasion provided the opening. At which time we would move on to another issue requiring debate. Additionally we spent time together on the Executive Committee for CLSA where Marc did his best to give back to the profession that he felt was a part who he was as a man.
Too early to lose Marc … My condolences to his family and friends, Ray

I am very sorry to hear this. Marc was a mentor to me at the state Board level because of his level headed take on things and the way he chose his time to speak on controversial issues. I wondered why we had not seen him at the state for awhile but the fight with cancer explains that. He had a special affection for the Humboldt area and we always use to manage to catch up when we would see each other at the conference or at Board meetings. You have to respect a guy who in 2015 was asking me if I could get my hands on a good whip saw for him. My sympathies go out to his family and friends, he will be missed.

I am shocked again to hear the passing of another CLSA friend.
Marc was a man of few words but those words were always valuable. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. I will miss him and his quiet wisdom that helped me more than anyone can know.

I am saddened to hear of Marc's passing. I was unaware of the challenges he fought; he is to be admired for his strength. Marc was a man of class and character and he exemplified all that is good in people. Rest in peace, my old friend. I will miss you.

Too much sad news like this lately.
I had the privilege of serving with Marc on the CLSA Legislative Committee and on the LS Exam Development Team. He was always one of the more level headed and thoughtful members of each. When he said something, it was always well considered - never a reactionary hip shot.
Marc and I weren't close friends, but he was one of those people that the more I was around him, the more respect I had for him. I will miss him.
My deepest condolences to Marc's friends and family.

First post in years, my apologies:
Very saddened to hear about Marc. I was a Chapter Rep (Director) during his tenure on the Exec Board. I also had the pleasure of chatting with him at several CLSA conferences. Marc was once of the most down to earth and genuinely friendly Land Surveyors that I have had the pleasure of associating with.
RIP Marc, you were one of the good guys.

WOW!!! I too did not know he was sick. He did not show any effects over the past couple years when I would chat with him at the conferences.
This is truly sad news as Marc was one of a kind and I always enjoyed spending time with him. It all started when we were grading exams together in Monterey.
RIP my friend and now another can give his opinion on the Celestial Baseline with other greats!
