I am saddened to report that Edward Guy Zimmerman, PLS 3732, passed away this morning. A date for services has not been confirmed at this time, but are expected to be held late next week.

I had the honor of working with Ed both in the Caltrans Headquarters Office of Land Surveys and at Sacramento City College where he served as adjunct faculty and de facto department head in the "Surveying Geomatics" program. Ed was instrumental in acquiring modern equipment for the "Surveying Geomatics" program, and establishing the Associate of Science degree in "Surveying Geomatics" there. He may be best recognized statewide for his role as the Basic Survey Math instructor in the Caltrans LS/LSIT Exam Preparation Videos, and nationally as the author of Basic Survey Computations, published by Landmark Enterprises.

He impacted numerous surveyors through his teaching.

He will be missed.

He definitely had a positive impact on my career in the late 1990s.

His nickname was Zoomer, reportedly from his racing days. I only knew him from the Sac City classes, but always enjoyed his courses. Anyone know how old he was?

Ed was the first person too confirm that I had passed the LS exam and the first person to introduce me as a Licensed Surveyor. Thank you, Ed.

Ed was a big part of my continued pursuit of surveying. He was one of those larger than life characters that gave his all. He helped coach me for the LSIT and pushed me to get passed my knee injury.

I fondly remember Ed from my days at Sacramento City College (SCC). Took my second land surveying course from Ed, back in 2002 and was one of the first to earn a A.S. in land surveying from SCC Land Surveying Program. I was still working as a geologist while taking courses from Ed and he was pretty influential in my career shift back in the early 2000's.

Cpt. Ed Zimmerman will be laid to rest on July 15, 2016 at 1 pm at Manzanita cemetery in Lincoln. We are having a grave site service per his request. Dress casual, it’s in the country with cattle nearby and oak trees surrounding him. He would like to invite everyone to join him in his final farewell.

Celebration of life will be at McBean Park Pavilion immediately following the services. Come share stories and pictures of Ed with family and friends.

Edward Guy Zimmerman

Edward was born July 23, 1935 in Pennsylvania and moved to Sacramento with his family as a child. Ed went into cardiac arrest while getting the newspaper with his dog Joker. Joker and the neighboring dog laid by his side until help arrived. Several passerbys stopped and performed CPR until his fellow firemen arrived on the scene. He lost the battle after 6 weeks in the hospital and passed away on July 1, 2016. Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbur, and his son, Toby Smedley. Ed and his wife Elizabeth shared over 40 years together. When they married Ed became a parent to five children - Tammi, Tim, Troy, Toby and Traci. He had great relationships with the kids' dad, Harold, wife, Randy and daughter, Courtney. He had 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Ed took in numerous kids over the years, never turning anyone away. He then became a grandpa to so many other children. In addition, Ed enjoyed many years as a girls' softball coach. He started his career at 16 years of age working for Spinks Corp. After graduation from Sacramento High School, Ed attended Sacramento City College where he met Gary Koster and remained friends for more than 60 years, including racing careers from 18 until well into their 70's.

He then got a job at State Lands Division as a surveyor. He moved on to Cal Trans and remained there until retirement. Ed taught at Sacramento City College as well for more than 30 years sharing his passion for math and surveying. Ed served as a fireman for Placer County Fire for more than 30 years, retiring in 2015. Captain Zimmerman will be laid to rest on July 15th at 1:00pm at Manzanita Cemetery in Lincoln. Gravesite services are being held at his request and everyone is invited to join him in his final farewell. A celebration of life will be held immediately following services at McBean Park Pavilion.
