This morning I'm reading Price v. de Reyes, 161 Cal. 484 (1911), which is on the east side of Cahuenga north of Sunset.

I find the survey apparently filed after the case was resolved (a tract map). It references County Surveyor map 1000.

The CS map isn't on line or I'm not able to find it on line.

Anyone know if this is easy to get? I didn't write down the tract info but it's easy to find on the CS GIS.

It is filed in Map Book 19, Pages 1-34. It subdivided a huge part of the San Fernando Valley in 1911.

OOOPS! Scratch the above - I mistook Tract 1000 for CS 1000.

You're right - CSB maps are available online, but not the CS series.

Here's the map to which Dave refers. It appears that CS 1000 was a retracement of the Rancho La Brea.

This is across Sunset Boulevard, and shows that CS 1000 established/retraced the centerline of same.

I'm pretty sure Tract 2129 was done to replat de Reyes's lot, like a lot line adjustment...

He is two feet short of the new (northerly) north line of Sunset which confused me because I assumed they measured from the wrong R/W corner. Then I saw the old R/W is about 4' south on Tract 3051. The problem is the 103' lot is 18" too far north per the County Surveyor. So they measured from the wrong place (neither R/W) or did a bad measurement job from the correct (southerly) north line of Sunset.

The Deed distance from the corner of Sunset is 207.5' per the opinion statement of facts. The tract map I linked shows 205.2' from the new R/W. The old R/W per the map of Hollywood is the correct P.O.B. and it is about 4' south per the tract Warren attached. So apparently de Reyes and his grantor, Bennett, measured about 209.2' from Sunset instead of 207.5'.

This is a case from when the Courts were still applying common sense. Now they are afraid to offend the God of the sacred P.O.B. tie. Either that or the Goddess of Taxes paid where the lot never was except on paper (she has a long name).

Justice Shaw wrote this one and Young v. Blakeman, another good common sense case from 1908.
