GNSS Observations for National Surveyors Week
Posted: Mon Feb 02, 2015 1:33 pm
I told my local CLSA chapter I would try to get an activity organized for National Surveyors Week. I don't see NGS administering a NAVD 88 benchmark GPS campaign like they did last year, but I'd like to see if we can do a similar activity at the state level.
I'd like to ask for my fellow surveyors to submit me GNSS observations they make over the course of National Surveyor's Week (March 15 to March 21). The observations need to meet the following criteria:
1) At least 2 hours in length.
2) Made with a fixed height tripod.
3) Occupy a good permanent physical mark, like an NGS disk.
I'll need the following information along with your GPS data:
1) Short description of the monument and its location.
2) A few photos of the monument.
I'll process all of the data submitted during the week in a single network, which I will then publish for everyone. The network datums and epoch dates will be based on the latest national datum per CORS.
I will plan a special time slot on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 1PM to 5PM for observations. If you make observations during this time slot...we'll get direct baselines between all the points, which results in a better solution for the monument location.
If I get enough participation, I'll write up a short article with photos that gives appropriate credit to all of the individuals and organizations that participate.
Please shoot me an e-mail (sunburned.surveyor@gmail.com) to let me know if you will donate observations so I can do some planning on my end.
Thanks!
