experience with new equipment

I was recently given "a lack of experience with new equipment" as an explanation for not being hired. As this forum is for professonal development, where would one go to get specific experience with new equipment? I am a bit confused as this being a reason for my not being hired, as it is my past experience that I could be brought on in a chainman capacity with the positions available.

Sounds like a BS reason to me. Equipment tends to get easier to use as technology advances. If you were applying for a chief position, I can see that reason being valid because you would be the guy expected to know how to use it and ensure others on the crew use it.

I have reviewed the equipment in question. I have the experience to use the equipment and from what I just reviewed of it nearly any well rounded person in the Land Surveying profession should have no issues with picking it up. I had said as much when I received the call this morning. I find it unfortunate that it was either seen as I could not use the equipment.

Ask for a debrief

The bottom line is they found someone that they liked better than you. It may have been hard to find fault with your experience, and explain what they liked about the other person better than you.

You could take the opportunity to find out what can you do better next time by asking for a meeting with the interviewer, by phone or in person, and asking what can you do better to improve your chances of getting hired next time. If they do offer criticism, constructive or otherwise, resist the urge to say "But..." or to try to convince them otherwise right then and there. Focus on listening and then consider what you can do better next time.

Thank for the advice Steve. I have asked to speak with the interviewer.

Out of curiosity, what new equipment were they speaking of?
