I just learned this morning that Dave Hobbs, recently elected chairman of the Los angeles Chapter of CLSA had a heart attack Saturday.

Wow! Another great surveyor down.

Thanks for all you shared with me, Dave! We had some interesting conversations.

WOW!!! I'm sorry to hear that. I usually talk with Dave every month or so. I can't believe that. He wasn't that old.

I, too, have great admiration for the passion and energy he had for the profession. He will be missed.

This is indeed sad news for surveyors. My condolences to David's family; I hope they can take comfort in the fact that he is highly respected in the land surveying profession. His energy and passion for surveying will be missed.

Sad news. My condolences to Dave's family and friends. They will be in my thoughts and prayers for God's peace in their time of loss.

I am shocked at the loss of a true friend, surveyor, mentor, husband and father. Dave in the short time that I knew you I was quickly included in the fraternity of surveyors in Los Angeles County. You always expressed your passion and love for your profession. You were a historian of kinds that held onto the history of your colleagues in LA County. I am truly going to miss you friend you were always quick to include others that stood on the sidelines. I hope to continue this legacy in your absence.

I am sad to hear this great loss. He was a mentor, and one of my favorite surveyors. While taking land surveying classes at College of the Canyons, we were asked to do a biography on a surveyor and I happened to pick him. Very classy guy, from his survey vehicle (safari Range Rover) to the mini museum set up in front of his office. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of working with Dave for the past two years at his "other job", as Cadastral Engineer for the City of Glendale. Dave worked out of our Info Services Department (ISD) in their GIS section. Today at noon, we met in the ISD conference room as a tribute to him, talking about Dave followed by a moment of silence prayer in his honor.

As Jay Seymour said, Dave was a class act. He always had a smile on his face, and a positive outlook on life. He made everyone feel important, and his enthusiasum and love for survey was unlimited.

I considered him to be a mentor; he was pushing me to take the LS exam (I will next year..). We were planning to search for a City Boundary monument up in the Verdugo Mountains later this week... At least once a week he would show up at my desk and we would sit and discuss survey and GIS. D@mn I will miss those talks....

RIP Dave

I worked side by side with Dave for ten years and probably know him better than any man alive. My heart is absolutely broken. I've been on the phone with well wishers since Sunday morning. When my head is better cleared I will write more. In the meantime...

I worked with Dave for about 3 or 4 years.
Dave was the last supervisor I had before I started at Caltrans in 1999. We spoke often, I have him on my voicemail right now, I owed him a call back, I cannot listen to it just yet...
We'll miss you "Hobbo" you where one of a kind, more later.....

And Michael, you have been absolutely amazing throughout this horrid situation, Dave is very proud of you right now my friend, may God bless you as well.

The surveying community has lost one of the great ones. Over the years David and I had become close friends. I will cherish the moments such as taking our sons on full day hikes in rough terrain in search of 1887 monuments in the San Gabriel Wilderness and many afternoons hanging out at Horizon's office discussing survey principles, technique’s and projects we were working on. David had a passion for the evidence and a true thirst for the truth. He was always ready to go “No Mission to Great, No Job to Small”, he never backed down from a challenge. A husband and father, a mentor, an educator, a professional and so much more. I have to say, I have seen few men give so selflessly to their profession and fellow professionals. Never to busy to lend a hand or give guidance.
I feel blessed to have known you David and will always remember our day's on the path of life together. Gods speed my brother.

This is unbelievable. My condolances to his family and friends. I've spoken with him a few times but only met him once or twice and he was one of the most interesting characters. A huge bundle of Southern CA surveying knowledge just got lost. He was one of the best.

My Condolences to the family and friends of David Hobbs–PLS. I did not know Dave personally, but we did share some Very Good e-mails back and forth regarding my CLSA Forum posts regarding the “2010 BOPELS Guide to Engineering & Land Surveying for City and County Officialsâ€￾. We also shared (via e-mail) some USMC-Semper Fi stuff. We both served our country proudly via the USMC.

Thanks to Michael Libott for sharing the GR…8 Picture of Dave with the Pink Flagging Tie. VERY ORIGINAL…! I waz looking for the “LIKE BUTTONâ€￾, then realized that this waz not Facebook..:)
