On a similar subject, It would be nice to have the point coordinates of some of these surveys in ASCII format. I can imagine using these for search coordinates, making Point of Interest files for a Garmin (or similar) navigation GPS, or other uses.

I don't have the electronic files available any longer since I've taken the job at East Bay MUD. Check over at the County, maybe they can write something out of SANGIS.

On some of the later ROS's we started scanning the field "to reach" sketches and including them on the map. On some of the earlier ones, these sketches are filed as Private Surveys. They are not really private, it was just a convenient place to file them where surveyors could research them.

I have created a kml file for google earth that has the points from the Encinitas and Carlsbad city control network surveys, but obviously there's a lot more out there.

You can download a shape file of control points from SanGIS. I have always assumed it was only the points established on the county-wide control network surveys, so I haven't bothered with it, but I looked at the data today, and was blown away. The attached image shows how many monuments they have in my neck of the woods. The only thing I can't figure out is how to make the connections from the point in the GIS software to the map that established it....

Apparently there are 22,285 points in the main file. You can also download a file containing only first order control, 1,795 points (a subset of the main file).

I figured out that the file with the first order control actually has all the stuff I was looking for: station, monument type and size, record of survey number, epoch, datum, etc. Very handy.

That GFISLOAD indicates that it was loaded from the County Horizontal Control database, so most likely it was not shown on a Record of Survey, but in County field notes. MAN PM 006 was a premark probably for a mapping project along Manchester Ave. It looks like it is a 3rd order traverse point established in 1981. It would have been adjusted on NAD27 then run thru an old NGS program LEFTI to convert to NAD83, so really the accuracy is probably less than 3rd order.

I would try to sort out that old stuff and not use it anymore. Limit your search to 1st order or better. Most of the 1st order points have the ROS number as part of the station name.

PS. I walked away from my desk for a while and did not see your other posts Blake. It looks like you got what you needed.

Do you still have to pay a blueprinter a few hundred bucks to get a copy of the r/s even though you only need 2 or 3 points. I got hit with that in one of the SD county cities.

The County has an on-line map portal where you can get a scanned copy of Record of Survey and other maps. It will cost you a few dollars, but not a few hundred. I had not heard of places charging hundreds of dollars before.
Did you tell them you were from out of town before you ordered the map?

Check the County Surveyors Online Research thread for the San Diego link.

Their site is very similar to the Orange County site - I believe the same person or company set it up. The RS sheets are more expensive than OC though. I think $4 or $5 per sheet to download, vs. $2.35 on the OC site.

I found this old drawing from 1995 that you may find interesting. I do not have all of the old fonts that I used, so it does not look as good as it once did, but it was my attempt to show the status of updated control work in the County back then.
