I have a survey I'm working on where the PL is in the middle of a slope and an angle point of the PL, where I could not find anything, falls on a stump. What are your thoughts on what type of monument to set here? My first thought is Nail & Tag. This is in Orange County. Need opinions/suggestions if Nail and tag is not the way to go.

Why not set a standard (approved) monument on an offset? Very simple and when documented, any surveyor will find the reference (R.O.S. or Corner Record).

said. You could also go 5 feet( or whatever) along the line both ways from the angle point and set a monument. Both lines would be monumented with a reference to the angle point. This may not work because of other obstructions, but it is a thought.

Although a mag spike and washer or gear head and washer at the angle point in the stump is not a bad idea either.

If the stump is solid, I would set a marker at the angle point AND something hopefully more permanent for line points.

I typically will set an offset equidistant down each line from the corner.

That was my second thought. I'll probably set three points. Pipes down each line 10' or so and then a spike with washer in the stump.

If the stump isn't too solid, you might be able to drive a sharpened rebar at the corner location. If the stump is too hard to do that, then there's a good chance that a spike will remain for quite a few years (depending on the species of tree and humidity, etc.)
