I for one do not have a problem with signing or sealing my check prints to the county surveyor. When I give it to him/her, the map is supposed to be good, so signing and sealing makes sense to me. my RS's have never been preliminary, at least they weren't supposed to be.

The record of survey shall also show, either graphically or by note, the reason or reasons, if any, why the mandatory filing provisions of paragraphs (1) to (5), inclusive, of subdivision (b) of section 8762 apply.

it says "by note". in the oc there is no "note". there has to be a "statement" even if the map shown makes apparent what is taking place, at least in my mind. This "STATEMENT OF PURPOSE" is a requirement in this county, near as I can tell. If the cs would have us change it to "NOTE" that would be 5 less characters that I would have to add to the map.

With a few exceptions, the graphics tell the tale and a note (or statement) is a silly superfluity, in my opinion. Sacramento County "requires" a note; I don't file there often, so to date I've complied. For a short while Yolo had a newly-minted LS as their CS consultant, and he copied Sac County's practice; I didn't challenge him on it, but I'm happy to say that since he left I'm back to relying on the graphical presentation to convey the reason for filing.

Most of the time a note *can* be added without requiring an additional sheet, which is a $500 bump in Yolo County. But on some maps there's no room for anything extra, and I tend to resist CS requests that exceed their statutory authority anyway as a matter of principle.

Agree. Don't see a point at all and I ignore it if I come across it on an ROS.

I have yet to see a R/S that needs a note. If the person using the map cannot decipher it's purpose they shouldn't be using it. The first time I had to make that statement I made it simple - like the old Dick and Jane books.

My experience is that no matter how diligent you are and how simple the map is you will not get it approved on one check so I just assume that it will take at least 2 submittals.

Occasionally I hear the term "It's so the public/layman can use it" Ok, go out on the street and ask people what 1.33ft is in inches or 0.83ft. Want a real blank look, ask a RE agent. LOL

When it comes to notes on a RS, I have included them on more complex projects, if the map is not clear on what I held for the individual lines.
I have also met with the surveyor reviewing the map when I submit to the county, so I can go over the project and explain my resolution. This truly helps the county when they are reviewing.

I do not feel notes are required, but it sure does assist future surveyors to understand your thinking and process to follow your footsteps.
