Wow! When I first read that, Steve, I thought Tiny was getting his license posthumously. Gotta love the English language.

And, I'd just read an article on all the stars who have "passed" this year...as in "no longer with us"...

I would not appeal. I appealed twice and found it to be a colossal waste of time and money. I never received a single point from the appeals. Maybe things have changed since 1998 when I passed. I don't know. My opinion is that time is better spent gearing up for next year (more study guides, classes, study groups, etc.).

You may not get a single point. What you will get is detailed information. I was 4 points short and appealed, only to get 3 points. Sounds like a cruel joke, doesn't it. But I was able to see what I received points for. That information was what I used to study the next time around. I passed the following year confident with the subjects I received point for and prepared for the subjects that I did not receive points for. It takes a long time to prepare for the exams, but if you filter what you need to focus on it will 100% increase the value of your study time.

I plan on appealing, what's it going to hurt? I've heard too many positives not to.

I wish there was something in Orange County though, driving to San Diego on a weeknight might not work out so well, especially as busy as I am at work right now.

what Everstudy. Count yourself fortunate that there is a venue 90 minutes away from your work, or real close thereto.(It takes me that long to drive from Huntington Beach to Tiajuana.)

If it was me who was you (not that you would want that, nor I), I would tell the boss that I needed to get off work an hour early in two weeks for the appeal class. I'd drive my tail down there, take the class, and drive back. Piece of cake, slice of pie.

Now if I didn't have a car, then I would probably try to take the train outa Fullerton or Santa Ana or SJC or San Clemente.

Now if I didn't have a car or I didn't have the money for a train ticket, but I had a horse(hopefully a saddle also), well then it's a whole different story then. And the reason being, I don't know how long it would take me to ride a horse to downtown San Diego or the TBD site. I might have to ask the boss for more time off.

Or take the suggestion by Mike Turnrose. Then you wouldn't have to deal with this 7 to 9 hour move from the OC to the SD. Like I said, count yourself fortunate that you have this opportunity, whether you take it or not.

That's incredibly poor advice, Mike. Having seen the number of examinees who obtain their licenses through the appeals process, it appears not everyone was wasting their time as you did. I don't know what you were doing, but those guys and gals who were successful at appeals obviously made better use of their time there.

It's too bad you didn't take the opportunity to use your first appeal experience to clue in on what graders were looking for and on what your weak points were rather than just looking at it as a point mining exercise.

Had you used that 1st appeal as a learning opportunity, you may not have had to go to that 2nd appeal.

It would be a shame if you were close and did not appeal. At the very least, it will be the best study session you ever had. Unfortunately (or fortunately) they do not provide the “Answersâ€￾ at the appeal session but you will plainly see where you made errors, and worst case scenario, be able to correct your actions next exam. In my experience, most of my errors stemmed from not understanding the question (taking it literal) and adding in my own assumptions. There is no trick except the one your mind plays on you during the exam!

I believe the Appeal process is a “groupâ€￾ effort … meaning, if a candidate has a plausible solution, states it clearly during the appeal, I believe others may benefit also if they had the same plausible solution, even though they may not have appealed the question. Please someone correct me if I am wrong. I was 17 points away when I appealed, and I don’t think I appealed everything perfectly, I believe another candidate helped me in his/her appeal, which was enough to put me over the edge. Just another assumption!

Good luck in your appeal, remember, be professional, and lead the graders down your logical path (following in the footsteps of your logic) proving to them you are worthy of becoming a Professional Land Surveyor.

I just went to their main page, where they have the list of update announcements. The most recent one is July 25, but it's about the upcoming Board meeting. I couldn't find the list.

The new numbers have been added to the license lookup. BPELS does not post a list.

OK. So what's the first new number then? I want to look over those that just got their numbers, but where do they start?

8818 is the first new number

It appears 8881 is the last number. That makes 63 new PLS's with more possibly through appeal.

Actually 64. New math really screwed me up!!

Having spent most of the last week obsessively checking the BPELS license lookup, the first number issued this year was 8817. Whatever the last number is (8881?) does not jive with the statistics that were given as to how many candidates passed the State Specific exam, i.e. 65 vs 72.

I am just jazzed I didn't get a Dear Phil letter saying they made a terrible mistake. The official notice that was sent to me was a pretty low quality copy. I could barely read the Official Boards letter head. Must have been sent on furlough Friday.

8817 was in there before the April results were listed. Maybe that was awarded after the October 2010 National exam in January 2011.

There could be people who passed the state exam and not the national exam, so only 64 new LS's, but 72 who passed the state exam. Those 8 will have another chance at the National exam in October.

I checked probably several hundred times and Demaio of Markleeville was the last LS number issued and now Macdonald is new.
Whatever, not as important as the posting of my number.

Its curious as to how they issue the sequence of numbers.

My theory is that the numbers are assigned by the order the exams are tossed in the pass pile. At one time I think they were assigned alphabetically, but not any more.

Contrary to some peoples' beliefs, I do not believe the order was ever determined by the score you received. If they wanted you to know how well you did they would have told you your score when you passed.

I guess all that matters is it 220 or greater, but human nature still leaves one to wonder how well you did.

Now the search is on for either a job or a mentor.
