Does anyone recall an article in one of the national mags speaking about the preservation of rails to establish right-of-way? I think it was in the range of five years ago, could have been more; senior moment ...

Hi Warren,

Not sure about the magazine article, but the RR Surveying 101 seminar put on by Charlie Tucker had some great info about this. His recommendation was basically to not use the rails, if at all possible. When maintenance is done on the tracks, especially in curved portions, the tracks will be lifted and reset resulting in the tracks moving horizontally by anywhere from a few inches to a foot or two.

This had more to do with tangent sections, and using culvert structures where possible. It referenced rail-to-trails legislation, and conserving evidence.of alignment. Sadly, I cannot remember the author.
